Established in 2008, The Joint Space provides expert care for a broad range of hip and knee conditions, specialising in complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, trauma and musculoskeletal tumour (sarcoma) surgery.

Our rooms are located in the Wesley Medical Centre, which is attached to the Wesley Hospital, one of Queensland's largest private hospitals.

Bio
EDUCATION
A/Prof Sommerville graduated from The University of Queensland receiving his medical degree in 1990. He completed his orthopaedic training requirements in 2000 and was granted a Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedic Surgery. He was then invited to complete further sub-specialty training via a Fellowship at the prestigious Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, UK, gaining further expertise in total joint arthroplasty and orthopaedic oncology. He then returned to Australia to commence his private practice at the Wesley Hospital in 2003.

PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS
In addition to his busy private practice, A/Prof Sommerville also maintains a public appointment with the Princess Alexandra Hospital, and manages a trimonthly tumour service at the Townsville Hospital.
In 2011 he was appointed as an Examiner of the Court of Examiners with The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), conducting Fellowship Examinations. The role of an Examiner is to assess the knowledge, clinical skills and professional competencies of candidates to ensure they are safe and competent to practice as surgeons.

He is an active member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), Australia & New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA) and the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS).
He is also the founding member of the Wesley Sarcoma MDT.

RESEARCH
A/Prof Sommerville maintains an ongoing research interest and regularly presents at local and international conferences. He is widely published in orthopaedic literature.
MEDICOLEGAL
A/Prof Sommerville is a Certified Independent Medical Examiner (CIME). He offers Independent Medical Examination (IME) appointments at his Wesley rooms and also provides Independent Medical Opinions (IMO).
DR PHILIP ROWELL
Bio
BACKGROUND & EDUCATION
Dr Rowell was raised in Brisbane’s western suburbs. He completed his undergraduate Science degree in 2003 and successfully completed post graduate medicine through the University of Queensland in 2008. He concluded his Orthopaedic training in Queensland in 2018 and was awarded a Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS). He underwent additional fellowship subspecialty training through The University of Toronto at the esteemed Mount Sinai Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).

PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS
Dr Rowell began private practice at The Wesley Hospital in 2021. Since 2019 he has held a position as an Orthopaedic Specialist at The Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he specialises in Musculoskeletal Tumour (Sarcoma) Surgery and contributes to Orthopaedic Trauma management. Since 2019 he has also held an appointment at The Prince Charles Hospital, a tertiary level arthroplasty centre where he specialises in hip and knee replacement surgery and General Orthopaedics. Dr Rowell was an early adopter of robotic assisted joint replacement technology and continues to contribute to research in this developing area. He performs a quarterly tumour outreach clinic at Rockhampton Hospital.
Dr Rowell is current Chair of the Queensland Bone and Soft Tissue Tumour Service and is the Orthopaedic Representative of the Robotic Surgery Steering Committee.
He is an active member of Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS), The Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA), Australian and New Zealand Sarcoma Association (ANZSA) and International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS).
RESEARCH
Dr Rowell has published and presented research locally and internationally in the areas of sports medicine, paediatric orthopaedics, arthroplasty and sarcoma surgery. He has an ongoing interest in musculoskeletal tumour (sarcoma) and arthroplasty research and has been author to multiple book chapters in his areas of expertise. He maintains multiple collaborative research grants from Translational Research Institute and Metro South Health Service. He supervises graduate research through Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and is a Senior Lecturer for The University of Queensland.
SOCIAL
Dr Rowell is married with four children. When time allows he may be seen sneaking in a game of chess, coaching junior sports or catching up with mates at his old rugby club.
